Cryptofaunal diversity in fringing reef rhodoliths

چکیده

Abstract Rhodolith distribution, morphology, and cryptofauna have been minimally studied on fringing reefs. We present the first study to examine both rhodolith distribution associated in a tropical reef, located along microtidal, wave-dominated north shore of Moorea, French Polynesia. find higher abundances larger, rounder, more branching rhodoliths locations where longer waves impact reef. Among 1879 animals extracted identified from 145 rhodoliths, ophiuroids, polychaetes, decapod crustaceans, gastropods are most abundant, with wide range additional taxa contributing diversity. Large contain greatest number diversity cryptofaunal organisms preferred habitat rigid-bodied, non-burrowing forms. Overall, exposure entering lagoon through passes appears be critical determinant abundance, morphotype, turn composition reef habitats.

Fringing reef growth and morphology: a review

Fringing reefs are generally not simple veneers of coral growth along tropical shorelines. Extensive research over the past few decades, based on radiocarbon dating of Holocene reef deposits, has indicated that they can develop in a complex variety of ways even though the surface morphology may appear relatively simple. The principal factor that appears to determine the growth and morphology of...

The Fringing Reef Coasts of Eastern Africa

Sea-level changes through the Quaternary era have provided recurrent opportunities for the biosphere to significantly shape the coastal geomorphology of eastern Africa. Key agents in this shaping have been the calcium carbonate-fixing biota that have constructed the oceanfacing fringing reefs and produced the extensive backreef sediments that form the limestone platforms, cliffs and terraces th...

Postglacial Fringing-Reef to Barrier-Reef conversion on Tahiti links Darwin's reef types

In 1842 Charles Darwin claimed that vertical growth on a subsiding foundation caused fringing reefs to transform into barrier reefs then atolls. Yet historically no transition between reef types has been discovered and they are widely considered to develop independently from antecedent foundations during glacio-eustatic sea-level rise. Here we reconstruct reef development from cores recovered b...

Dissolved fatty acids in seawater from a fringing reef and a barrier reef at Grand Cayman1

The concentration of dissolved fatty acids decreased in seawater as it flowed across a windward barrier reef at Grand Cayman. No comparable changes were observed over a leeward fringing reef although an increasingly enriched organic surface layer could be detected as distance from shore increased. across reefs (e.g. Johannes et al. 1972). Here I report observations on changes in dissolved fatty...

Response of reef corals on a fringing reef flat to elevated suspended-sediment concentrations: Molokaʻi, Hawaiʻi

A long-term (10 month exposure) experiment on effects of suspended sediment on the mortality, growth, and recruitment of the reef corals Montipora capitata and Porites compressa was conducted on the shallow reef flat off south Moloka'i, Hawai'i. Corals were grown on wire platforms with attached coral recruitment tiles along a suspended solid concentration (SSC) gradient that ranged from 37 mg l...
